Riot Central Park, Townsville, QLD | 2024

Riot was initially made for a public exhibition in Townsville created using aluminium and mirrored stainless discs. The artwork went on to win the acquisitive prize and was re-made using marine grade stainless steel. Riot refers to the raucous nature of the red tailed black cockatoos who live within the Townsville parks and gardens. They entertain visitors at dusk by flying in loud mobs, throughout the trees in the city. The mirrored discs allow visitors to see their own fun and playful activity reflected in the character of the cockatoos. Projects like Riot highlight how material selection, finish, and protection all play a role in enhancing not only the physical structure, but also the interactive and visual experience for the public. Enviroflon 8480 Enviroset 2100 A huge shout out to Sam Moss who has once again pulled off a brilliant public outdoor sculpture exhibition. Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk set in Brunswick Heads, NSW invites artists from near and afar to exhibit. The set up and organisation for this show can’t be underestimated and Sam knows how to look after her artists. I was fortunate to win this years prize with “Riot”. Thank you to everyone involved. Charred Memories Whitton Memorial Park Whitton, NSW 2018

Charred Memories, Wind Messenger and Leeton Lanterns were commissioned at the same time as part of a collection of artworks for Leeton Shire titled Lyrics, Landscapes and Lintels.   Charred Memories retells the story of the small town of Whitton, which used to be a thriving small town in the Riverina area of NSW but was demolished by fire in the early 1900’s.  Wind Messenger pays homage to the nearby RAMSAR wetlands and the local Wirradjuri people.  The endangered bittern featured on one of the panels was known as a messenger in Wirradjuri myths. Leeton lanterns were designed to reflect the art deco history of Leeton.  Walter Burley Griffin designed the layout of the town and his creative stamp can still be found on many landmarks and buildings around the area. Enviroflon 8480 Enviroset 2100 These striking installations not only tell important cultural and historical stories but also rely on material performance and finish to bring each piece to life. Ensuring the colours, textures, and surfaces remain true over time, despite exposure to the elements, is essential to preserving their visual impact. A&I Coatings’ Vitreflon 700 (V700) played an important role in achieving this outcome. Used to enhance and protect the surface finish, V700 helps bring out the depth of colour and overall aesthetic of the artworks, while maintaining long-term durability. V700 supports both the creative vision and practical longevity of projects like these. Together, the combination of storytelling, design, and advanced coating technology allows installations such as Charred Memories, Wind Messenger, and Leeton Lanterns to stand as lasting tributes, capturing history, culture, and place for years to come. Credits go to Carla Gottgens for her professional creative work across the arts and photography sectors.

Solvent vs. Water-Bourne Coatings

When it comes to floor coatings, the difference between solvent-borne and water-borne systems is more than just the carrier liquid. At A&I Coatings, we’ve noticed that operators often make critical mistakes when switching from solvent-borne polyurethane (SBPU) to water-borne polyurethane (WBPU). Rushing the process or applying water-borne coatings the same way as solvent-borne can lead to defects like fisheyes, runs, or poor leveling. Understanding the nuances of water-borne coatings is key to getting a flawless finish.

The Hidden Cause of Corrosion Around Bolts

You’ve probably seen it before—white, powdery corrosion forming around aluminium base plates and bolts. Even with a high-performance coating system in place, this type of failure is surprisingly common.
So what’s actually causing it—and more importantly, how do you stop it?

Mastering Atomization: Achieving the Perfect Polyurethane Finish

Atomizing polyurethane coatings is the process of breaking the liquid coating into fine droplets so it can be applied evenly across a surface. It’s a fundamental part of industrial finishing—and getting it right is key to achieving a high-quality result.

Paint overspray remediation

Paint overspray remediation is the process of removing excess paint particles from a vehicle or capital equipment after painting.

What does dewpoint condensation do?

Feeling hot and bothered? It’s not always the temperature or humidity, it’s the dew point. Not only does it affect people, but it also affects paint!

Glamis Road Bascule Bridge

This beautiful bright red Bascule Bridge was one of the first in England to be coated with a Vitreflon fluoropolymer paint system by forward-thinking asset owners, demonstrating a commitment to long-term performance. The extended durability of this system means they will soon benefit from reduced maintenance costs over the life of the structure. The Coating System applied to this bridge was as follows: Steel Substrate: Prepared in accordance with ISO 8501-2 St3 1st Coat: Vitreset 419 Surface Tolerant Epoxy with Aluminium Flake – 125 microns DFT Stripe Coat: Vitreset 419 2nd Coat: Vitreset 419 Surface Tolerant Epoxy with Aluminium Flake – 125 microns DFT Final Coat: Vitreflon 790 Two-Pack Fluoropolymer Topcoat – 50 microns DFT Fun Fact: What is a bascule bridge? A bascule bridge is a type of movable bridge that uses a counterweight to balance its span—or leaf—during its upward swing, allowing boats to pass beneath. Unlike vertical lift bridges, a bascule bridge provides a completely clear passage with no vertical obstruction when raised.

How To Choose The Best Floor Coating

A true epoxy is always a two-part product that combines a resin and activator chemical. Epoxies do not dry in the same fashion as paint, instead, they cure and harden. Paint dries as water or oil evaporates and leaves behind solid particles on a surface.

Polyurethane vs Epoxy Floor Coating

In this post we discuss polyurethane vs epoxy floor coating. Epoxy and polyurethane thin film coatings are very useful and versatile for floors.

Tips to Select the Right Coating for Your Application

Different types of coatings are used to protect surfaces from corrosion, wear and tear, and decay. These days, we have a wide range of coatings available for different types of surfaces. Selecting the right coating for a specific application can sometimes be tricky.
