Historically, garage floors have not been given much attention in the way of protective floor coatings.
In fact up until the early 20th century, garage floors were made from packed dirt or gravel. Modern developments in garage construction, however, have seen concrete used as floorings instead of the aforementioned materials. During the 1980s and 1990s, people began to pour more effort into maintaining their garage floors. Doing this helped the home or workshop property retain its value and became a source of pride due to their glossy, seemingly impervious aesthetic. With care and attention via a coating, garage floors could now also be converted into office spaces or spare bedrooms. There are several coatings which can be used to protect and enhance the visual appeal of garage floors: acrylic, polyurethane and commercial epoxy floor coating are just a few, however one of these is a clear leader in terms of quality and aesthetic.
Acrylic Paint
Acrylic paint is not the winner in the contest for garage floor dominance. Acrylic paint can add some colour to otherwise dull garage floors, however it chips very easily and does not adhere well to non-porous concrete. It is cheap and easy to buy and install, yet will not retain its initial appearance very long, particularly if you’re using the space regularly and does little to protect the floor. Epoxy Floor Coatings
Epoxy floor coating has been regularly cited as an excellent floor coating to use in garages. It provides a highly appealing aesthetic that can be enhanced further by adding flakes. It’s extraordinarily resilient and lasts for years. Epoxy coatings provide protection against chemical and oil spills as well as water spills. Epoxy is a superb choice when coating garage floors. A&I Coatings supplies high-quality water borne epoxy floor coatings to the Australian market through Haymes Paint and other resellers. A&I also supply solvent borne or 100% solids epoxies.
Polyurethane Floor Coatings
Polyurethane coatings are not suitable for direct application to concrete but are an excellent overcoat for sealing in the flakes or where sunlight can damage the epoxy. Epoxy coatings will yellow in sunlight without losing film integrity, but polyurethanes are non-yellowing. Both water borne and solvent borne polyurethane coatings are available Australia wide through Haymes Paint and other resellers.
