FEVE Fluoropolymer – The real thing or a cheaper alternative?

Coatings chemistry is confusing. One thing is sure, that true Fluoro Ethylene Vinyl Ether based coatings give the best durability known to the industry.

There are cheaper and less durable alternatives. FEVEs is based on vinyl ester rather than vinyl ether, and has a correspondingly lower bond strength, therefore less durability.

FEVE was developed by Asahi Glass Chemicals, now AGC. Their Lumiflon is the original fluoropolymer. A&I uses Lumiflon resin, and independent durability testing verifies the wisdom of this strategy.

Take care when offered cheaper alternative coatings, ostensibly fluoropolymer or FEVE. It is likely based on FEVEs, and doesn’t have the bond strength and therefore not the durability.
