VITRETHANE 650: Challenging The Status Quo.

What’s the difference between Vitrethane 650 Isocyanate Free Polyurethane made by A&I Coatings and other Isocyanate Free coatings marketed as Isocyanate Free Polyurethanes?

Vitrethane 650 combines fully functional polyurethane resins and patented coating technology to create the first commercially available Isocyanate Free Polyurethane Coating. This patented technology sets it apart from all other isocyanate free coatings such as catalysed acrylics, modified epoxies, enamels etc.

This novel, high-performance polyurethane topcoat provides zero exposure to isocyanates during application, whilst still retaining the high chemical and uv stability of a polyurethane network. This is achieved by changing the curing mechanism of the coating, whilst still retaining the polyurethane network embedded in the chemical structure.

Many recent advances in isocyanate-free coatings have seen the development of new technologies which utilize alternate chemistries to achieve the finish of a polyurethane system such as catalysed acrylics or modified epoxies. This technology, however, does not have the durability of a polyurethane.

Isocyanate Free coatings such as Lacnam 720, Paracryl IF540, Camsafe IF898, Acrathane IF to name a few, fall into either the catalysed acrylic or modified epoxy bracket.

The Polyurethane functionality or network is nonexistent in catalysed acrylics and modified epoxies, however these are often referred to or associated as being polyurethane functional coatings.

A quick google search for Isocyanate Free Coatings reveals some manufactures marketing or listing their versions of isocyanate free coatings as “Isocyanate Free Polyurethanes”. A look into the manufacturers data sheets tells you it is in fact NOT an Isocyanate Free Polyurethane coating.

I’m not sure if you call this false advertising or just trying to elevate a poor-quality coating up to the same level as a Polyurethane……

A&I Coatings currently has the only true isocyanate free polyurethane available in Australia.
