Tredgrip is a styrene acrylic copolymer which has a high elasticity and tensile strength with the addition of partly cross-linked crumbed rubber which acts as a nonskid medium in the high solids solution.
Solids content is in excess of 65% which yields a coating of high covering power, excellent weathering ability and high resistance to pollutants, acids and alkalis.
Tredgrip can be applied to most substrate types very successfully. These include concrete, timber, steel, aluminium and fiberglass.
Application to Concrete
We strongly recommend concrete to be acid etched with solution of Hydrochloric Acid, flushed with plenty of clean water and allowed to dry. If the surface is smooth and powdery, we strongly recommend the use of a thin coat of Tredprime prior to the application of the Tredgrip. Once the primer has dried (approx. 15-20 minutes) three coats of Tredgrip should be applied according to the directions on the can. Alternatively, if Tredprime is not being applied, the first coat of Tredgrip may be thinned to 20% with water for extra adhesion. See GPS 2100.
Application to Timber
We recommend the use of an acrylic timber primer such as Envirothane 8054 prior to the application of the Tredgrip. See GPS 2102.
Application to Steel
If the steel is internal, clean and free of loose rust, Tredgrip may be applied directly to the steel with very good results. For outside application and in situations where rust is an issue, we recommend application of Envirothane 2300 Epoxy Primer after suitable preparation. See GPS 2103.
Application to Aluminium
Thoroughly clean and abrade, then apply a Universal Primer such as Envirothane 8054, followed by three coats of Tredgrip. See GPD 2101. This FAQ sheet provides some guidance that must be read along with the relevant Technical Data Sheets, and it depends on the contractor having a basic understanding of how to use the coatings described. Application to Fibreglass
Clean thoroughly taking care to remove any salts, then abrade thoroughly. Apply two to three coats of Tredgrip. See GPS 2104. Note: Tredgrip should not be applied to areas subject to total immersion such as baths, showers, inside of swimming pools etc.
Tredgrip is very resistant to salt water and weathering. If however it is to be recoated, it should be washed and cleaned very carefully to remove any trace of salts.
Tredgrip is resistant to a wide range of chemicals including acids and alkalis, and has also good resistance to most solvents and oils.
When applied in accordance with Specification, 5 – 10 years may be expected from Tredgrip, depending on the intensity of traffic. Tredgrip is not a heavy duty industrial nonskid coating but an easily applied domestic and light commercial type product.
Applied according to Spec, Tredgrip will cover 6m2/Litre/coat. We recommend 3 coats, so that on a finished job you will get 2m2/Litre. This is variable depending on porosity and texture of the surface.
Tredgrip is applied as a fairly heavy film and it takes more than an average time to dry. We recommend 3 hours minimum drying time between coats in average drying conditions, and 72 hours before traffic.
If existing paint is sound and has good adhesion to the substrate it should be cleaned and abraded before over coating. If the paint is flaking or cracked it should be completely removed before coating.
Tredgrip can be applied using a brush or soft synthetic broom, a long nap roller, or a hopper gun. When brushing and rolling, apply the first coat in one direction and the second at 90º to give an even appearance. Wash out equipment with water.
• Tredgrip is not a rigid coating, but is rather a permanently flexible film which will move with the substrate as it expands and contracts.
• Tredgrip is fairly heavy bodied and will bridge of fill hairline cracks in concrete, and then move with substrate movement.
• Tredgrip has good service life and is easily repairable.
• Tredgrip can be tinted to most colours.
