Vitreset 419 –
Surface Tolerant Epoxy

Vitreflon 790 –
High Build Fluoropolymer Topcoat

The Gabba, Brisbane’s iconic cricket ground, is one of Australia’s most famous sporting venues, hosting international cricket and major AFL matches. Renowned for its passionate crowds and rich sporting history, the Gabba has become a symbol of Australian sport and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world.
15 years after a major redevelopment, A&I Coatings was selected to provide a durable, long-term coating solution as part of the Gabba’s refurbishment. The project focused on protecting and preserving the stadium’s structural steel while delivering a high-quality aesthetic finish capable of withstanding Brisbane’s demanding subtropical climate and ensuring the venue remains an iconic sporting landmark for years to come.

Project Challenge:

  • The structure is exposed to high UV levels and high humidity conditions.
  • Long-term durability and colour retention were critical due to its prominence and visibility.
  • Minimal maintenance downtime was required to avoid disruption to events and operations.
  • Surfaces included varying preparation requirements.

Why This System:

  • Vitreset 419: A high-performance, surface-tolerant epoxy mastic designed for both steel and concrete substrates. Its fast-curing properties and excellent application by brush or roller make it particularly suitable for refurbishment projects where surface preparation may be limited. Available in a wide
range of colours, including aluminium finishes, it provides robust corrosion protection and durability.
  • Vitreflon 790: An advanced FEVE fluoropolymer topcoat engineered to deliver superior resistance to UV exposure, weathering, and colour fade. Offered in unlimited colours and various gloss levels, it achieves high film build in a single coat, helping to reduce maintenance requirements and extend coating life. Together, these systems provide a durable, aesthetically pleasing finish that delivers long-term asset protection, enhanced visual appeal, and reduced lifecycle maintenance costs—making them an ideal solution for a landmark
    venue such as the Gabba.

Project Execution:

  • Surface preparation and cleaning were performed prior to coating application.
  • Vitreset 419 applied as a surface-tolerant base coat to all steel and concrete surfaces.
  • Vitreflon 790 applied as a high-build topcoat, achieving uniform coverage, exceptional gloss, and UV stability.
  • The coatings were applied to meet strict aesthetic and performance standards, ensuring protection in a challenging environment.

Results & Benefits:

  • Long-lasting protection for steel and concrete substrates
  • Excellent UV, colour, and gloss retention, even in harsh tropical conditions
  • Reduced maintenance frequency and costs, extending the asset lifecycle
  • Enhanced aesthetic appeal, maintaining the landmark’s iconic appearance
  • Trusted solution for specifiers and engineers, demonstrating FEVE technology performance

Outcome:

The refurbishment of the Gabba demonstrates the importance of selecting a coating system that delivers long-term durability, performance, and visual appeal. A&I Coatings’ Vitreset 419 + Vitreflon 790 system provides superior protection for the stadium’s structural steel and concrete surfaces, helping to minimise maintenance requirements while preserving the appearance and integrity of one of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues for future generations.

Implementation Highlights

The Pakenham Station redevelopment exemplifies the successful integration of advanced digital fabrication techniques in public infrastructure projects. A&I
Coatings, working alongside ShapeShift, delivered an ultra-high-performance coating for the ShapeShell™ RT panels, contributing to a sustainable,
efficient, and architecturally distinctive station that serves as a model for future infrastructure projects.
