Birds of a Feather Inner West GreenWay

(Sydney’s Inner West Council region)

Project Details

Location:
Johnson Park, Dulwich Hill, Inner West Council, Sydney, NSW

Completed:
2025

Size/Scope:
Ten 10mm aluminium feathers installed along the GreenWay pathway, each inspired by a local bird species

Birds of a Feather is a permanent public artwork created for the Inner West GreenWay in Sydney’s Inner West Council region. This green corridor offers a walking and cycling path through a highly built-up area, providing both aesthetic and ecological value to the local community. The artwork celebrates the local birdlife and highlights the efforts of InnerWest environment groups to maintain habitats for wildlife. Ten aluminium feathers, painted in colours inspired by the birds of Johnson Park, create a kaleidoscope of hues visible through glass rounds along the pathway.

A&I System Featured

VITREFLON 700 – a unique two-pack fluoropolymer resin-based (FEVE) topcoat that delivers long-lasting UV and weathering resistance, superior gloss retention, and durable, low-maintenance protection for outdoor installations.

Applicator:

D&M Automotive Paint – application of A&I Coatings VITREFLON 700 paint system to the aluminium feathers

Scope of Works:

  • Fabrication of the aluminium feathers, material selection, footings, installation, and shop drawings provided by Webb Welding
  • Structural engineering completed by Partridge Engineering
  • Surface preparation of 10mm aluminium feathers
  • Integration with Toucan Forged Glass elements to create interactive viewing points along the pathway
  • Application of VITREFLON 700 topcoat by D&M Automotive Paint, for durability and colour fidelity

Products Featured:

  • VITREFLON 700 fluoropolymer topcoat (FEVE)
  • Durable aluminium substrates
  • Glass rounds fabricated by Toucan Forged Glass

Challenges and Outcome:

The primary challenge was ensuring that the painted aluminium feathers could withstand outdoor exposure while maintaining vibrant, bird-inspired colours over time. VITREFLON 700’s UV and weathering resistance ensured the colours remained vivid, while its high durability minimized maintenance. The collaboration between D&M Automotive Paint, A&I Coatings, and Toucan Forged Glass delivered a visually striking and interactive installation that complements the Inner West GreenWay, creating an immersive experience for walkers and cyclists alike.
